 Did You Know...

"Leis" is wrong!
The term "leis" is incorrect.  There is no letter "s" in the Hawaiian language and to pluralize a word, the word before the noun is changed.  So why did I choose to name the company with an incorrect word?

There are two reasons for this: First, as in other cultures, when the American language influences their culture, many words become modified.  The creation of Spanglish and Pidgin english are examples of this.  As the term, "leis" have become quite common and loosely used in daily conversation, although incorrect, most people understand the merge and accept the cultural progression it represents.

The second reason for me choosing the word "leis" is also the same reason I chose to identify my company with the geographic location, "Las Vegas".  These terms reflect more liberal ideas and allow latitude in creativity.  I believe that my creative lei art express the traditional Hawaiian culture and the progressive American influence.

I believe that those individuals that purchase my brand, "Las Vegas Leis" share my creative expression, enjoy the polynesian cultural influence, and identifies with the American opportunity.  I sincerely apologize to anyone that is offended by my choice of the use of this word and hope you now understand my thought on this matter!

Is it sewing a lei or stringing a lei?
Growing up on the island of Oahu with many family members active in the floral industry and a third generation lei stringer, I was constantly corrected when using the word "sewing".

My father made sure my sister and I understood that we were "lei stringers".  Since then, the industry has evolved and the term "stringing" a lei has dwindled. Today, people commonly use the term, "sewing".

Like the word "leis" the word "sewing" a lei are being used loosely and has become an accepted term.  "Stringing" and/or "sewing" have become interchangeable and although it was instilled at a young age that the correct term is "stringing", I am open to the progression of the industry and accept its place in today's "lei" world.
